NEWS RELEASE SIXTH ANNIVERSARY PROGRAMME OF COCHLEAR IMPLANT AT SRI RAMCAHANDRA UNIVERSITY Chennai, Children who had undergone cochlear implant at Sri Ramachandra University and those awaiting the procedure along with their parents took part in the sixth anniversary celebration at the university campus here today. Speaking on the occasion Dr.A.Ravi Kumar, Professor and Head of the Department of ENT, head and neck surgery said implants have now become smaller and people who had already undergone this surgery in the past can easily be integrated with this equipment. Research is on in India and abroad to make the implant even more smaller, smarter and cosmetically acceptable he said. Very soon a totally implantable cochlear implant may be available as against the present behind the ear processors. Mrs.Latha Rajendran, Principal, Dr.M.G.R.Home and Higher Secondary School for Speech and Hearing Impaired said the cochlear implant offers an excellent hope for the hearing impaired and thanked late NPV Ramasamy Udayar for his generous help in setting up the school. Sri Ramachandra University is the first medical college to have an exclusive cochlear implant programme.
