Speciality treatments like Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Smoking Cessation & NIV for patients with obstructive sleep apnea are routinely offered.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centre
The department of Pulmonary (Respiratory) Medicine of Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (DU) has started the Pulmonary Rehabilitation centre.
Sri Ramachandra rehabilitation centre is a fully equipped ( treadmill, upper body ergometer, light weight  dumbbells etc) state of the art centre managed by well trained personnel.

What Is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an integral part of the clinical management and it is a structured program of exercise and education for  those patients with chronic respiratory disease who remains symptomatic or continue to have decreased function despite standard medical treatment.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is an outpatient program for patients with chronic lung disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD), chronic bronchitis, emphysema, bronchial asthma interstitial lung disease etc who have respiratory symptoms  like cough, breathlessness that result in decreased daily activities or a decrease in health related quality of life. Pulmonary rehabilitation is designed to reduce the  symptoms and stabilize lung disease.

The pulmonary rehabilitation program is conducted  by a multidisciplinary  team  which includes Respiratory  physician, physiotherapist, respiratory therapist, psychiatrist / psychologist, nutritionist, nurse and a yoga therapist. All are  trained in pulmonary rehabilitation.

The pulmonary rehabilitation program is designed to improve health related  quality of life, improve exercise tolerance, and decrease hospitalization. 

Who will get benefited?
People with chronic lung  diseases  like  COPD, emphysema, Bronchial Asthma, interstitial lung disease, pre and post  lung transplant patients and people who are exposed to  indoor/outdoor pollution having  breathlessness,  cough  reduced ability to walk  or work, needs pulmonary rehabilitation

Why do you need it ?
If you have been diagnosed with any one of  chronic lung diseases as mentioned above and have breathlessness, find it difficult to do day to day activities, you may benefit from this program.
The exercise will improve your breathing and functional ability. You will be educated about breathing exercises, sputum  clearance, oxygen therapy, inhaler technique and emotional support which will improve your ability to care for yourself.

Components of Pulmonary Rehabilitation program
A Pulmonary rehabilitation program has several components, including
•   
Exercise testing
•    Inspiratory muscle training
•    Breathing exercise
•    Psychosocial counseling
•    Nutritional evaluation and counseling
•    Education, including proper use of prescribed drugs such as aerosol therapy

How it is done and for how long?
First you will be examined by a qualified respiratory physician and after assessment, you will be referred to the concerned Pulmonary rehabilitation team.
Pulmonary rehabilitation program consists of small group sessions for 2 to 3 times a week for 6 to 12 weeks ( one hour of supervised exercise like treadmill, weight training and one hour of education on nutrition, medications, wellness and living with lung disease).
