Faculty of Physiotherapy

Clinical focus
The Department of Physiotherapy provides physiotherapy services both Out patients as well as In patients.

Out Patient Physiotherapy
An average of 100 -150 patients are being given physiotherapy daily. The services include massage, manual therapy, movement therapy, electrotherapy modalities, thermal agents, cryotherapy, exercise therapy etc. The beneficiaries are patients with musculoskeletal problems, degenerative conditions; stroke patient’s etc.The physiotherapy unit (F1) is located in the first floor of Sri N.P.V Ramasamy Udayar Block and an outpatient unit is located in ground floor of faculty of Physiotherapy.

In Patient Physiotherapy
An average of 200 - 250 patients are given physiotherapy daily. Patients in Intensive Care Unit are given round the clock care by the Physiotherapists.

Special clinical services

Cardiac Rehabilitation
Physiotherapy department and Cardiac Care Centre jointly started Cardiac Rehabilitation unit in September 1999 and has treated over 2000 patients under this package. We have received excellent feedback from the patients who have attended the Cardiac Rehabilitation Services.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics
A separate Obstetric and Gynecological Physiotherapy clinic has been set up for educating about pre  post natal care  exercises and various women’s health issues.

Karthikeyan Child Development Unit
An early intervention program is conducted along with neonatology department.

Vidya sudha
School for children with special needs, where physiotherapist works in team with professionals like occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, special educators, social workers to integrate the children in the society.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centre
The pulmonary rehabilitation program is conducted by the multidisciplinary team which includes Chest physician, Physiotherapist, Respiratory therapist, Psychiatrist, Psychologist, nutritionist, social worker, nurse, educationist and a yoga therapist who are all trained for pulmonary rehabilitation.

Rheumatology
The department of physiotherapy and rheumatology jointly renders  care for patients with rheumatological conditions in improving their quality of life.

Camps
  • Physiotherapy camp was organized by the Ministry of Education, Government of TamilNadu on the 2nd  August 2011. The Camps were held at three schools. The Presidency Girls Higher Secondary School, Egmore, Pudur Government Higher Secondary School, Mambalam and Nandanam Government Higher Secondary School, Nandanam. 500 students are benefited from this camp.
  • On Occasion of World Physiotherapy Day,  camp was held by the Faculty of Physiotherapy in La Chatelaine School for screening children for Physical/functional abnormalities on 08.09.11. 200 students got benefited from this camp.
  • Screening camp and Specific Exercise Prescription for Neck and Low Back pain for all SRU employees was conducted by the faculty of physiotherapy from 10.09.12 to 15.09.12. 156 employees got benefitted by this camp.
  • Health Awareness Camp was conducted at  Annambedu Village, Thiruvallur District on 09.03.18. 300 people got benefitted by this camp.
  • Exercise Education camp for Geriatrics was conducted at Physical Rehabilitation Centre, Out
    Patient Physiotherapy Department on September 2013. 100 persons got benefitted by this camp.
  • Rural Disability and awareness camp was conducted by KCDU, SRIHER (DU) at Vayalanallur in November 2018.50 patients got benefitted by this camp.
  • Geriatric Women’s health camp –Screening and awareness was conducted at Littledrops, Iyyapanthangal on December 2018. 40 women were screened and educated for musculoskeletal discomforts.
  • Geriatric Women’s health camp –Awareness on pelvic floor muscles was conducted at SV Homes Arumbakkam Chennai on January 2019.  30 women benefitted by this camp.
  • Faculty of physiotherapy conducted a camp on “fall risk reduction and promotion of physical
    fitness “at Little Drops old age home, Iyyappanthangal on 24th July 2019 and  34 inmates  were assessed for the above components and got benefitted.
  • General awareness camp on physical activity was conducted by NSS team of the Faculty of physiotherapy on 20.07.19 at Karunakaranchery. 350 people got benefitted by this camp.
  • Early screening of chronic pain in musculoskeletal conditions camp was conducted in the
    Orthopaedic outpatient department from 09.10.19 - 11.09.19 (3 days) and in rural health & training center, vayalanallur on 12.09.19. A total of 126 participants were benefitted from the camp.
  • The camp in rural health centre, vayallanallur was conducted on 12th September 2019. Around 70 individuals were screened and 30 participants were benefitted by exercise rehabilitation and counselling.
  • Faculty of physiotherapy and Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology conducted a PCOS-awareness program in adolescent girls on the occasion of world physiotherapy day celebrations on 7th September 2019. Totally two hundred first year students from Allied health sciences, Pharmacy, Clinical nutrition, and Physiotherapy attended the program and participated in screening.
  • Plastic free village campaign and Jalshakthi village programme was organized from 11.09.2019 to 02.10.2019. 30 NSS volunteers from Faculty of Physiotherapy took part in this programme.
