Welcome to our regular orthodontic blog inspired by Dr. Kevin O Brien’s “occasionally irregular blog about orthodontics!”

With the massive respect that we have for him, we have decided to follow in his footsteps and create a forum for the discussion of articles that we read, every month.

Our hope for this composite blog (pun intended) is that it will help create an amalgamation of ideas and opinions that will ultimately result in the expansion of knowledge and a deeper understanding of the subject.

We are the department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER).

SRIHER formerly known as Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute is a deemed university located in Chennai, the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India. Our campus as well as our department has students from all over the country, who come to pursue their undergraduate/postgraduate degree.

Chennai (or Madras, for a nostalgic effect) may be home to top quality educational institutions, nobel laureates and world renowned artists, but the smell of freshly brewed filter coffee can awaken a Chennaite in any part of the world!

This bustling city, with it’s long beaches is also known as India’s health capital- attracting 45 percent of health tourists around the world. Among the several world class facilities and medical institutions is our university- SRIHER.

SRIHER was established in the year 1985 and the dental college began to function in the year 1995.

This year marks it’s 25th anniversary and to commemorate the same, we – the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics from SRIHER present to you this blog!

Our team comprises of our head- Prof. Dr. Vignesh Kailasam, Prof. Sridevi Padmanabhan, our associate professors Dr. C. Siva Subramanian, Dr. Nithya Jagdish, Dr. S. Bhadrinath, Dr. P.S. Haritha, our senior lecturers Dr. A.Venkateswaran, Dr. Annapurna K, Dr. R. Pamila Rachel, Dr. Nandita Krishnaswamy and Dr. Keerthi Venkatesan

At present we have 14 dental graduates (incipient orthodontic student writers?) who will take turns to read, analyse, critique and discuss articles on this page.

About-us

A lot of thought has gone into what this image should be- because ultimately the logo tells you who we are and where we come from.

Strong roots, anchor teeth- the molars. We believe in unshakeable foundations and ‘functional efficiency’ as Jackson rightly put it.

Within the molar buccal tube placed at the centre, are the initials of our blog.

The R represents – Ramachandra, with a mini-implant running across its tail, also making it look like the transliterated symbol for a medical prescription.

The O that stands for ‘orthodontic’ contains the globe. We would not be where we are today, without the ideas, and practices that have travelled the world. Our intention for this blog is also to reach out to as many countries as we can.

After all, we have to dream big! Right?

As a dedication to a great human being, who told us time and again to do just that- we have incorporated a symbol of the late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam with his signature hairstyle. The former President of our country, our “Missile Man” inspires us every day to pursue our dreams.

The B of course stands for ‘blog’- while it could also stand for ‘beyond’, we leave the canvas empty for we do not know what is in store. What is yet to come, could possibly be… ‘breath-taking’? (Well, not in the literal sense. We certainly do not believe in compromise of the airway!)
