A Faculty development program enables faculty members to acquire skills that enhance their performance in their roles as teachers and researchers and it improves student outcomes. Rapid evolution in medical education methods and approaches require faculty who are capable of embracing these changes. Students are also demanding a better quality of education. As a result, there is greater recognition of the importance of implementation of faculty development programs. Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute has been conducting Faculty Development Workshop as "Teacher Training Workshop" since 1995.

The Medical Council of India, by the MCI Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997, made it mandatory for all medical colleges to establish Medical Education Units (MEUs) to enable faculty members to avail modern education technology for teaching. Following this mandate, MCI has been conducting Faculty Development Programmes through selected Regional Centres, since July 2009 . Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute was recognized as one of the Regional Centres in 2009, as it had the required trained manpower and resources in Medical Education Technologies. SRMC&RI was permitted to conduct the Basic Course workshops, AT-COM sensitization programs and (revised) rBCW for in-house faculties and for faculties of its allotted colleges and one day coordinator workshop for the coordinators of Medical Education Unit of other colleges. At present, there are 24 medical colleges under SRMC & RI Regional centre. The objectives of these workshops were, to sensitize teachers about new concepts in teaching and assessment methods, to help develop knowledge and clinical skills required for performing the role of competent and effective teacher, administrator, researcher and mentor, to assist clinicians to acquire competency in communication and behavioral skills, to update knowledge using modern information and research methodology tools. Our faculties are also deputed as MCI observers for the faculty development program conducted by the medical colleges under SRMC & RI Regional centre..

Medical Council of India revised the Undergraduate medical education curriculum in 2019 with more focus to enunciate the competencies the student must be imparted and should have learnt, with clearly defined teaching-learning strategies and effective methods of assessment. Communicating effectively and sympathetically with patients and their relatives has been visualized as a core area of the revised curriculum. For effective implementation and sustenance of the envisaged curricular reforms, Curriculum Implementation and Support Programme (CISP) training workshops were conducted at SRMC & RI for in-house faculties and for faculties of colleges under it. To enable implementation of the Phase II new UG curriculum, CISP II was conducted for in house faculty and faculty of other colleges completely on an online platform.

The Medical Council of India initiated the conduct of Advance Course in Medical Education (ACME) in 2014, with the purpose of developing educational practitioners who can lead educational changes in their institution and to make medical education responsive to the health needs of the society. Advance Course in Medical Education was planned to be conducted by upgrading selected Regional Centres to Nodal Centres with required trained faculty and infra-structure. SRMC & RI was one of the Ten Nodal Centers recognized by MCI for the conduct of Advance Course in Medical Education. It has been conducting Advance Course in Medical Education since 2014 and at present, there are 61 Medical Colleges under SRMC & RI Nodal Centre.
