Skills Lab

Overview

This is a programme designed to enhance the clinical skills and its application to solve clinical problems of the medical student. The students learn clinical skills in a structured step manner in small groups on standardized patients, models, mannequins etc. They also learn to respond to clinical problems and apply their skills to solve them by simulations. Guided by the clinical skill demonstrators (facilitator) students meet the learning objectives. Small group demonstration and skill performance allows close monitoring of students and an objective assessment of skill acquisition.

Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute has created a Clinical Skills Lab for both Undergraduate (MBBS) programme as well as for the Postgraduate programme in the fields of General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Accident and Emergency.

Postgraduate skills lab provides higher level practices like laparoscopic techniques, temporal bone procedures, open reduction and internal fixation and other complex procedures on appropriate box trainers / bone models. Usually not more than two students are located per working station under postgraduate level and four students in undergraduate levels.

We are in the phase of advancing the skills facility with state-of-art hi-fidelity simulators including standardized patients. This would enable students to interact with standardized patients to improve their history taking and communication skills.
