Science Awareness Program

To provide an ambience that would promote limitless imagination and enable the school students to kindle their interest on science through play way learning, The Department of Allied Health Sciences came up with the idea of Science Awareness Program, an exhibition cum project-based teaching event for young school students. The event coordinated by Ms. Betty Lincoln along with Mr. Navaneetha Krishnan identified Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Poonamalle and Government Higher Secondary School, Iyyapanthangal. School students from Classes 6^th and 7^th grade from both English and Tamil medium of instruction were exposed to interesting science experiments.

The faculties along with ten students from AHS and OPTOM visited the school students with the prepared model and experiments. The event started with Ms. Betty Lincoln addressing the school students on how to enjoy and learn science rather than simply memorizing the concepts. Also highlighted that most of the day to day activities had science as its underlying principle.

This was followed by the Medical College students demonstrating experiments on concepts like Capillary rise, mechanism of lung, Bernoulli’s principle, refraction of light, mini robot to list a few. Mr. Navaneetha Krishnan explained the concept of
light refraction and types of lenses. During the session the students were asked questions based on their academically relevant topics and were awarded gifts.

Another interesting part of the program was “Gone in 60 seconds” where the students were asked to complete a given task in 60 seconds. Around 110 students participated enthusiastically and made it extremely interactive and interesting. A positive feedback from the students was received and they expressed that they were highly benefitted with the program. They also expressed their willingness for more of such programs in future.

The winners were felicitated with gifts in the presence of their Headmaster. The school management expressed their gratitude for exposing their students to scientific concepts in an interactive and interesting manner.

The program was a great reach and we are sure it kindled the student’s interest towards science and will change their way of looking and learning science.
