About the Department / Program
The department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery in Sri Ramachandra Medical college and Research Institute was established in 1994 .Our faculty comprises of four surgeons and five MCh trainees. We deal with an entire spectrum of cardiovascular and thoracic diseases which includes both adult and congenital cases .We have two dedicated operating rooms which is capable of handling four to six cases a day .We have state of the art intensive care unit with 27 beds which includes three specially equipped transplant rooms (positive pressure rooms) dedicated to adult, paediatrics , step down & isolation care .The cardiac catheterization and vascular intervention lab are located next to the operating rooms to facilitate close coordination between cardiologists ,interventional radiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons .The coronary care unit is adjacent to our ICU .The cardiac catheterization lab, operation theatre ,ECMO and trauma care facilities are available round the clock. Our outpatient consultation rooms, library, academic room, office and duty rooms are adjacent to our ICU giving us constant access to our ICU and inpatients .We have performed 17,011 cases of cardiovascular and thoracic surgical procedures to date since its inception .We take pride in announcing that we were awarded the BMJ South Asia Award for Best Surgical Team-Runner’s up for the 2015.
Achievements The department takes pride in having performed the first successful Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) via transaortic route on the World Heart Day this year
Again, the first successful neonatal ECMO on a two day old neonate in the country was performed by our team .
Recently, we performed three heart transplantations on consecutive days -a unique feat , which we believe was made possible by our utmost dedication .
