About the Department / Program
In the ever changing field of intensive care, the Department of Critical Care Medicine in SRMC & RI  has been in the forefront of cutting edge advances for the past two decades. The state of the art multidisciplinary intensive care unit manned by a team of highly skilled doctors provides round the clock care to critically ill adult patients. 
The unit is equipped to handle any form of medical and surgical emergencies.  The department handles approximately 3000 patients every year out of which nearly 40% are on advanced  ventilator support.
In addition to patient care, the unit has been actively involved in research in the field of critical care and has several national and international paper presentations and publications to its credit.
The department also provides specialized training in Critical Care Medicine in its multidisciplinary ICU.  The DM Critical Care program is designed for trainees to develop advanced Proficiency in the management of all aspects of the care of adult critically ill adult patients and to develop the skills necessary to excel as leaders in critical care.  We also run a nationally recognized program, which trains 4 IDCCM Fellows.
As a team, the department actively develops clinical protocols, multidisciplinary committees and champions quality improvement programs to enrich overall quality of patient care.
