Unesco Chair in Bioethics at SRIHER

Unit of the International Network of UNESCO chair in Bioethics was constituted in SRIHER on December 15^th 2016. Writ was handed over by Dr.RussellDsouza. A 16 member steering Committee was formed with Dr.P.V.Vijayaraghavan as head and Dr.UshaVishwanath as secretary.

3T - IHBSc Course for Medical & Health Sciences Faculty - The Indian Program of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics (Haifa) was undergone by all the steering committee members of SRIHER with Dr.RussellDSouza, Dr.Mary Mathew, Dr.DerekDSouza & Dr.Gireesh as core facilitators. 3 steering committee members of SRIHER serve has National Training Faculty for 3TCourse, UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Haifa.

Bioethics workshop was conducted in SRMC Equinox - National level undergraduate medical conference conducted by the students of Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute were 25 student participants from various college were perched the basic principles of bioethics to propagate among their peers.

Subsequent to the constitution of Bioethics Unit, a unit of the International Network of the UNESCO chair in Bioethics at SRIHER, it was felt that the introduction of bioscience-bioethical themes in all education curricula should be a definite requirement since all students will need to participate, as future citizens in making ethically informed choices about the ‘doing’ of science. In order to highly motivate and charge up the students, we have formed the Students Bioethics unit of SRIHER with steering committee members from all colleges under Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research. The students bioethics committee is reconstituted every year.

UNESCO Chair in Bioethics (Haifa) announces the celebration of WORLD BIOETHICS DAY globally on 19th October every year with a specific theme. Dr.Mary Mathew,Head, Indian Program International Network of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics (Haifa) & Dr.Gireesh, Deputy Dean/VP, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre were the invited chief guest for the WBD celebrations at SRIHER so far.

An inspirational talk on bioethics and a panel discussion with eminent professional in bioethics are a constant part of WBD celebrations. Students of all constituent colleges under Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research pro-actively organize and take part in various competitions like Just a Minute (JAM), Adzap, Shipwreck, Ludicrous headlinesetc.under WBD every year.

Prelimary World bioethics day competition will be held every year to send entries for the International Competitions under

• Scientific Poster Competition
• Photography Competition
• Short film/ Video Competition

World Bioethics Day conducted at SRIHER receives overwhelming participation every year. The Program analysis of WBD 2017 was presented in International Bioethics Forum conducted at Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore which was appreciated by the dignitaries of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics.

SHIHER students have won several prizes at World Bioethics Day 2017, 2018& 2019 International Competitions so far.
