Obstetrics & Gynaecology Nursing


The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing meets the curricular needs of B.Sc Nursing (Basic), B.Sc Nursing (Post Basic) and M.Sc Nursing students-Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing. Apart from Obstetrics and Gynecology related subjects, nursing faculty members contribute their expertise to other subjects such as Nursing Education, Advanced Nursing Practice, Nursing Research, Nursing Administration and Sociology. The department conducts value based add on course on neonatal nursing for the duration of six months.Faculty extend their support for other courses namely, B.Sc -Allied Health Sciences, Bachelor of Physiotherapy and B.Sc Trauma Care Management.

The Department has well established laboratory equipped with simulator, mannequins, instruments, models and audio-visual aids to facilitate teaching-learning process. Advanced electrically operated NOELLE Maternal and Neonatal Birthing Simulator and a manual birth simulator permit students to appreciate the complete birthing experience and also provide competency in Advanced Life Support procedures, Obstetrics and Neonatal resuscitation protocols and high risk maternal care. An episiotomy suturing simulator is an additional asset for students to practice suturing skill before stepping into real life settings. Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology nursing is equipped with e-nursing process and intra / internet facilities. E - Nursing process learning acts as a ready reckoner for students in the clinical settings.

Structured methodologies are utilized to enhance skill learning in clinical area for the students. Procedures performed by the student in the clinical area is assessed using competency checklist. Online feedback from students at the end of each clinical posting helps to analyze the strength and rectify deficiencies in student learning process.

Student learning in the clinical area is strengthened by the nursing faculty as well as presence of a clinical instructor in each ward. Conduction of competency training workshop for the clinical instructors under the wings of the Nursing Education Unit preserves uniformity in imparting skill learning. The faculty members periodically update teaching, evaluation and research skills by active participation in the faculty development programs organized by the University and also by other institutions.

Student Awards:
The student with the highest marks in Midwifery and Obstetrics in B.Sc. Nursing (Basic) is awarded with Saradhammbal Gold Medal and student with the highest marks in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in M.Sc. Nursing is awarded with Prof.P.V.Ramachandran Gold Medal.
