Oral Medicine And Radiology
Academics
The department has a dedicated team of faculty members who support the educational merits of dental students to become true health care professionals. The undergraduates are trained to become competent in the practice of oral medicine, by performing a proper assessment of patients including the review of medical records, lab reports, and to develop a detailed dental treatment plan. The treatment plan must be consistent with standards of care set forth by the evidence-based dental medicine literature. The integral educational experience offered in the department enable the learners to be compassionate and responsible to serve mankind.
Undergraduate Program
The interactive lecturers empower the undergraduates with the necessary knowledge background for oral diseases, oral radiology, oral oncology, therapeutics and nutritional supplement, and advanced dental care for patients with systemic illness. The training for the management of medical emergencies in a dental setting is provided through didactic, simulation and clinical exposure. Chair-side discussion is a routine practice to inculcate clinical knowledge, communication skill, and professional ethics. Small group discussions are conducted for case discussion, to impart critical analysis and problem-solving abilities. Systematic training is given in conventional and digital intra-oral radiographic techniques and interpretation of the dental lesions. The curriculum also focuses on forensic dentistry and the students are trained in personal identification, age estimation, and documentation of dental records, law, and ethics in dental practice. Assessment of learning happens continuously with appropriate feedback sessions to enhance the learner’s progress. The learners are encouraged to engage in scholarly activities including research, scientific publication, and presentations when an opportunity arises.
Postgraduate Program
The department provides graduate students with an immersive, collaborative, and inspiring environment where they can develop a broadly informed, highly disciplined intellect that will help them be successful in the specialty practice.
Extensive training is given on medical risk assessment and necessary dental care modifications to prevent or manage bleeding disorders, adverse drug interactions, and undergo the necessary dental procedures. Radiology case review sessions are complementary to clinical case presentations and provide an interactive forum to discuss challenging radiology cases and help to reinforce diagnostic radiology principles. Structured training is given on advanced imaging modalities like computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and scintigraphy. Hands-on training is provided for tobacco cessation counselling and nicotine replacement therapy. The needful patients should be followed up periodically by the graduates to ensure abstinence from the habit. 3600 assessment is carried out to analyze the outcome. The graduates should assess the oral cancer patients for pre-radiotherapy planning, intervention during the course of radiation, and post radiotherapy care. This seminar series and journal clubs will focus on reinforcing knowledge of topics within the field with an emphasis placed on applying this information to clinical practice. Value-added programs are offered regularly to equip the graduates to enhance the recent advances in the field. The knowledge skills and attitudes of each postgraduate student are periodically assessed by the faculty members and then submitted to the course head. The course head then meets with each postgraduate student to review all the evaluations and provide a feedback summary of their performance. The outcome measures will be planned according to the individual learners need.
