About the Department / Program
The Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry provides Pre-doctoral and Post-Doctoral training in comprehensive oral health care for Pediatric patients from infancy through adolescence including children with special health care needs. The Department thrives to achieve a high ethical standard of practice, promotion of education, and research in the field of Pediatric Dentistry. The “Centre for Early Childhood Caries Research”, one of its kind in Asia, that primarily focusses on Early Childhood Caries- A Global Dental Health problem in children, is located within the Department. Through various Inter-Departmental activities within the Departments of Medicine like Pediatrics, Plastic surgery, Oncology, Neonatology, Gynecology, etc., and within the other Departments of Dentistry, patient care is improved to a great extent, also, the scope for clinical learning and research increases. The “Psychological ownership practise” among students brings in a sense of owning a private practise and provides the necessary training to practise independently in future. Our clinics provide comprehensive oral health examinations, teeth cleaning, fluoride treatments, sealants, restorative procedures (fillings, crowns, etc.), extractions, minor surgical procedures, space-maintainers, interceptive orthodontics, laser treatment and trauma management. We render rehabilitative treatment under general anesthesia for very young children with special health care needs. School Dental Health Programs are regularly conducted among the children/parents/teachers to create awareness about common oral health problems in children and their prevention.
