About the Department

The Department of Nephrology was started in SRMC in September 1995. The Nephrology department has state-of-the-art equipment and facility for total renal patient care under one roof for both adults and children. The department is housed in the second floor of the seven-storied building in a clean and serene atmosphere wherein patients undergo hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. There is a separate post renal transplant intensive care unit in the same floor for the comfort of patients and relatives, a spacious waiting lounge has been provided for them to relax.
In order to cater to patients of poor socio-economic strata, service OPD functions from Monday to Saturday in the G block where professional services, basic investigations, and drugs are provided at a subsidized rate. There is also an inpatient block for poor patients where professional care, hospital charges, basic investigations and drugs are given at free of cost to the BPL patients.
Renal Transplant services were started in 1995. We are pioneers to start Cadaver Kidney Transplantation and organ sharing program voluntarily as early as in 1996. We have completed more than 600 transplants which include cadaveric transplants. We have voluntarily initiated the program of organ sharing within city hospitals as early as in 1995 when we sent a kidney to a poor patient in Government General Hospital Chennai.
